Grant boosts green upgrades at Sacramento schools

Published: 1 years 103 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Plans for $100 million in green upgrades to Sacramento's school buildings received a boost from the national organization that certifies eco-friendly and energy-efficient buildings.

The U.S. Green Building Council on Tuesday named the Sacramento City Unified School District as one of the first school systems in the nation for its $300,000 green schools fellowship program.

The three-year fellowship will fund a full-time sustainability officer who will help direct the school district's energy efficiency programs, indoor air quality programs and its maintenance and transportation work.

"We have set a lofty goal of becoming the greenest region in the country," said Mayor Kevin Johnson, who announced the award at the
city's final "Greenwise" initiatives meeting at the Guild Theater on Tuesday.

"And a large part of this commitment is to green our schools," he said.
