Business community, insurance companies rip Sacramento's new 'crash tax'

Published: 1 years 116 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  As word of the new ordinance spread Wednesday, the pushback was fast and furious: The business community called it another example of the anti-business climate at City Hall. Insurance companies claimed it would result in higher premiums. Residents of neighboring suburbs said they would think twice about heading into the city.

With a 5-4 vote late Tuesday, the Sacramento City Council adopted an ordinance requiring people who do not live in the city to pay the costs of the Sacramento Fire Department response if they are involved in a wreck within city limits. Under the ordinance, a nonresident is defined as anyone who does not live in the city and is not a majority owner of a business headquartered in Sacramento.

In passing the ordinance, Sacramento joined roughly 60 cities and fire districts around the state – including Roseville and Woodland – that have similar policies.
