Sacramento Bee: It didn't grab headlines like Michelle Rhee's announcement that she has chosen Sacramento as home for her national school reform group. It isn't as exciting as Mayor Kevin Johnson's goal to double the number of green jobs by 2020.
But the mayor's pledge to bring business and labor closer together could pay big dividends as the region's economy struggles to recover.
Johnson's gesture of inviting labor leaders to sit at his table forhis third State of the City address – hosted Thursday by the Sacramento Metro Chamber – was noteworthy and welcome. So was his announcement that next month, he will convene a meeting with labor and business leaders and city officials to discuss how to create "the right environment" for growth downtown.
"As our city works to recover economically and create jobs, it will be critical to forge stronger collaboration between our business and labor leaders," Johnson told supporters in an e-mail previewing his speech.
