Mayor Johnson: Time for Sacramento to regain 'mojo'

Sacramento Business Journal:  In his annual State of the City address, Mayor Kevin Johnson said that while economic forecasts for the next two years are grim, Sacramento can make progress by taking on projects “we can do for ourselves and pay for ourselves.”

For his part, Johnson broke the news that the national organization StudentsFirst, formed and headed by former District of Columbia public schools chancellor Michelle Rhee, who is Johnson’s fiancée, will be headquartered in Sacramento. StudentsFirst will have an annual operating budget of $200 million.

In his remarks to more than 900 Sacramento Metro Chamber members gathered at the Sacramento Convention Center for the Metro Chamber
event, Johnson said Sacramento has historically been a city of “prospectors and dreamers” and somewhere along the way “we lost our
mojo.” To get it back, he said, “We stop trying to lower the bar for ourselves individually and start raising the bar for ourselves collectively.”

Instead of limping through the current economic crisis, Johnson said Sacramento should tackle its challenges head on by building its “green” economy, revitalizing the downtown core, and making its public schools excellent.

“I fervently believe that these three priorities can ensure our long-term success as a city,” he said.
