Sacramento Bee: Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in California, the capital of the nation's most populous state.
Yet it still seems to be searching for its identity in the 21st century. Its leaders are ever on the lookout for the secret to success.
So how does Sacramento stack up?
While Ryan accentuated the city's strengths and potential, it fell to Mayor Kevin Johnson to speak the truth. Following Ryan to the lectern on Tuesday, Johnson told the breakfast crowd that the capital city is nowhere to be found on the list of "next cities" – the 60 U.S. hot spots for young, talented workers.
Sacramento scores well on the "vitality" index of air and water quality, green space and residents' health, and on the "earning" index of job growth and income. But it does not do as well on the "after hours" index of places to go and things to do, or on the "learning" index of high-quality education.
Johnson vowed that his city will be on the next list of "next cities" when it comes out in four years or so, and challenged Ryan to come back to see all the exciting developments. "Sacramento deserves to be there," he told the audience.
