Sacramento Bee: The deal that will turn Sacramento's Arco Arena into Power Balance Pavilion is raising eyebrows in the sports-business world. It's a marriage between a major league sports franchise and an up-from-nowhere manufacturer of wristbands that are trendy but not universally known.
Yet for the Maloof family, which owns the arena and its most famous tenant, the Kings, the contract with Power Balance LLC extends the family's strategy of catering to the cool, hip and not necessarily mainstream.
If the Kings should move to a new arena in Sacramento – fulfilling a decade-long quest by the Maloofs – he said Power Balance would have first right to negotiate a new deal.
The deal, effective March 1, will do more than slap Power Balance's name on the building. The company will sell its products at the arena, the Palms and other venues in cooperation with the Maloofs
The company is one of many official NBA "product licensees," said league spokesman Tim Frank.
And Mayor Kevin Johnson, who's leading the drive for a new arena, endorsed the agreement.
"Definitely look for me to be wearing a wristband at the next Kings game," the former NBA star said in a statement issued by his press
secretary.
