Sacramento the 'bellwether' for mid-sized NBA markets, mayor says

Published: 1 years 132 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  As another round of proposals for a new sports arena is considered, Sacramento has become the bellwether for the fate of mid-sized NBA markets.

That was NBA Commissioner David Stern's message to Mayor Kevin Johnson in a recent conversation about the future of the Kings and the ongoing
push to build a new facility in the city.

At this morning's State of Downtown breakfast, Johnson said that Stern told him, "If we can't make it work in Sacramento, then he doesn't
know if mid-sized markets around the country are going to make it."

"We are carrying the baton for mid-sized markets," the mayor said.

A task force appointed by the mayor is reviewing four proposals for a new arena. An analysis of those proposals is due out next week in
advance of a City Council discussion on building a new facility.
