Sacramento Bee: "I thought if you are governor, you want to be right downtown, right next to the Capitol," Brown said during a campaign stop in midtown Sacramento days before the election. "That is why I moved into an apartment."
Brown also is paying attention to Sacramento. According to Mayor Kevin Johnson, the governor called him after the inauguration and, along with discussing other topics, bent his ear about the need to fix the blighted K Street Mall.
"Living downtown is important," Brown said during his November campaign speech. "One reason I wanted to come back to Sacramento, there are few empty stores there and I want to get them filled."
Yet Brown, who divides his time between Sacramento and a home in the Oakland hills, seems to recognize that urban life is not for everyone.
Cities, suburbs and rural communities all will need and expect his attention.
"The fact I like people living in a city doesn't mean I don't like all you people in the suburbs," he said during his campaign speech. "There
are a hell of a lot more votes out there."
