Sacramento Bee: It's recruiting season again for Sacramento City Unified high schools.
Students have more choices than ever, a good thing.
Families and eighth-graders are making the rounds of "Options Nights" and "Visitation Days" at middle and K-8 schools to get information about their options.
An open enrollment period also begins Feb. 14.
But there's a catch. The district does not provide information to parents about all the public high school choices within its boundaries.
One public school has been visibly left out of the recruiting pipeline – Sacramento Charter High School.
Which district high schools are overflowing and need more space? The reality is one of declining enrollment: High school enrollments dropped from 14,600 students in 2005-06 to 14,200 in 2009-10. In that five-year period, the three largest high schools lost students:
Kennedy, McClatchy and Burbank.
Instead of singling out Sac High for discriminatory treatment, the district would do better to focus on improving all of its high schools to attract more students – and ensuring that families know about all of their options.
