Sacramento Bee: The western end of Sacramento's K Street Mall is a desolate place. But bright lights, nightlife and mermaids are inching over from the east.
In January, San Francisco nightclub operator George Karpaty plans to open an entertainment complex near 10th and K that will include a gourmet pizzeria, a nightclub catering to the 25-to-30-something crowd and a "dive bar" featuring a 7,500-gallon aquarium in which people dressed as mermaids and mermen will perform.
It's the latest installment in a torturous effort to revive the city's once-proud core.
"We can't fail any longer," said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. "We've failed on K Street for over 40 years."
Over the next several months, K Street will undergo its most dramatic transformation since the mall was blocked to automobile traffic in 1969.
