100 Sacramento community leaders decry rising gang violence

Published: 1 years 153 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  A few feet from where Monique Roxanne Nelson gave her life to save her 2-year-old son, Jayden, from stray bullets, 100 of Sacramento's community leaders and activists met in front of Fly Cuts and Styles hair and nail salon on Stockton Boulevard to ask the community to help find her killers.

"Monique's a true hero," said Mayor Kevin Johnson, asking any witnesses to tell police what they know. "We cannot solve this crime unless you come forward - we'll make sure you're protected."

To address problems caused by Sacramento's 65 gangs, 6,000 identified gang members and a 75 percent spike in violent crime over the past six months, Johnson promised to host a community crime prevention summit in January to create more jobs and better schools.
