Alice Waters, in Sacramento visit, lobbies for locally grown school meals

Published: 1 years 166 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  When it comes to growing Sacramento's green economy and educating
local children, celebrity chef Alice Waters believes that there is such a thing as a free lunch.

The owner of Berkeley's Chez Panisse restaurant is the prime mover behind schoolyard programs around the country that offer students free school lunches from food grown on campus.

Speaking at Mayor Kevin Johnson's monthly "Greenwise" initiatives meeting on Tuesday, Waters said the region's economy could benefit greatly if local school districts purchased their school lunch supplies from farmers and organic growers in the Sacramento area.

"(This) could stimulate the local economy and sustainability," she said.
