Sacramento Bee: The city of Sacramento has a $350,000 fix to the series of illegal home permits issued last year in Natomas.
The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a plan that the Federal Emergency Management Agency said addresses the violations that took place last year when a development department employee issued the permits.
Those permits – for 35 new homes – violated a federal building ban in Natomas that is in place while levees in the area are upgraded.
While the plan will cost the city up to $350,000, it will save property owners in Sacramento thousands of dollars in discounts they receive on flood insurance.
More than 16,000 property owners in the city receive up to a 25 percent discount on their flood insurance rates as a result of the city's solid flood management rating, which FEMA officials said will be maintained as a result of the corrective action plan approved by
the council.
