Sacramento Bee: Sacramento Steps Forward, a community effort to combat homelessness, has made great strides moving people into permanent housing, but a tent city likely will be a key stepping stone in the process, officials said.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Sacramento County Supervisors Roger Dickinson and Roberta MacGlashan led a first anniversary celebration of the initiative Monday at the Serna Village apartment complex in McClellan Park.
In its first 12 months, Sacramento Steps Forward has achieved 60 percent of its three-year goal of providing permanent housing to 2,400 households, Johnson said. In addition, 250 permanent units are under construction and 145 housing vouchers were secured for homeless veterans.
By the end of 2010, more than 1,675 permanent housing opportunities will have been created.
