California capital looks for a place for governors to stay

Published: 1 years 188 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  It's not a matter of policy but an issue of address when some ask:
What will be the next governor's first move?

The question arises every time a new chief takes office because of California's distinction of being one of five states in the country without a governor's mansion.

"It makes us look like a bunch of yokels," said Pat Melarkey, a former chairman of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. "We might as well put up a log cabin in Rio Linda."

"I'm going to do everything I can to get him to commit to being in Sacramento," said Mayor Kevin Johnson. "If he said it would take me spearheading a charge to build a new governor's mansion, then sign me up."
