Mayor Kevin Johnson urges youths to be eco-friendly

Published: 1 years 188 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  The dozens of teenagers gathered Saturday for Mayor Kevin Johnson's green youth summit in south Sacramento pledged to carry reusable water bottles, turn out lights and take shorter showers.

Not to be outdone, Johnson pointed out his recent eco-friendly lifestyle change – the purchase of a black hybrid Chevrolet Tahoe.

"Our vision is to transform Sacramento into the Emerald Valley," Johnson said. "We want to make this the greenest region in the country."

The youth summit was part of the mayor's Greenwise initiative, which has hosted regular meetings since May with regional business owners, city officials and now area youths to brainstorm ways to preserve the environment and simultaneously reduce the double-digit unemployment rate.

Johnson plans to use ideas from the meetings to create a 10-year action plan, which he will disclose at the state of the city address in January.
