Sacramento mayor wants to explore city, county merger

Published: 1 years 198 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Renewing a decades-long debate, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said Thursday he wants to talk about whether the city should merge with unincorporated portions of the county.

After expressing relief at a morning news conference that Arden Arcade voters Tuesday rejected a measure to create their own city, Johnson said he expects talks to begin next year over the future of that part of the county – including whether Sacramento should annex the area. There are "a lot of reasons (Arden Arcade) being part of the city of Sacramento would be a good thing," he said, but did not provide specifics.

The mayor went on to say he'd like to explore whether the city and the hodgepodge of unincorporated areas of Sacramento County beyond Arden Arcade should consolidate.
"Why would we not want to have a conversation?" he said. "If things are working perfectly, then great, kumbaya and let's just all have a good time."

A merger of the city and unincorporated county would result in a city of 1,053,869 residents, making it the third-largest in the state – larger than San Jose, but smaller than San Diego and Los Angeles. It would also be the 10th largest city in the nation.
