Mayor Johnson still mum on Measure B utility rate rollback

Published: 1 years 202 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Amid the flurry of campaign mailers this week urging Sacramento voters to shoot down a proposed rollback of city utility rates was a piece that arrived in mailboxes Thursday with a long list of the measure's most prominent opponents.

What was significant about the list was whose name wasn't on it.

Mayor Kevin Johnson, who has said for weeks that he was still making up his mind on where he stands on Measure B, was not among the list of opponents that included every one of his City Council colleagues, more than 30 neighborhood leaders and the city police and fire chiefs.

The mayor's stance on the measure is still unclear. Johnson's special assistant, R.E. Graswich, said Friday the mayor still hadn't decided whether to support or oppose the measure.

Under Measure B, a recent 9.2 percent hike in city utility bills would be erased next July and rates would be frozen for one year. The City Council could not raise fees in the future above the rate of inflation without voter approval.
