Sacramento Bee: Sick of having the state borrow funding from their already battered
budgets, local city and transportation officials are urging voters to pass Proposition 22 on Tuesday.
Prop. 22 would prohibit the state from taking redevelopment money, transportation funding and other dollars from local governments. Last year, the state used roughly $5 billion in local funding to help balance its budget.
"The state cannot take dollars from our cities to balance their budget, it doesn't make sense," Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said at a Wednesday press conference. In Sacramento, for example, the city transferred nearly $12 million in property tax and roughly $26 million in redevelopment funding to the state last year.
The League of California Cities, some police unions and the state Chamber of Commerce support the proposition.
