Sacramento Bee: City Councilman Rob Fong told a crowd of advocates Tuesday that he is "embarrassed" that Sacramento is not further along in its efforts to find housing for homeless people.
"I'm embarrassed that you have been talking to us for a year, and not much has changed," said Fong, who is behind a program to get religious congregations to "sponsor" homeless families.
Later in the day, Mayor Kevin Johnson sounded an upbeat note on the issue, pointing out that his homeless initiative has helped find permanent housing for 1,350 people in the past year with the help of federal funding and private industry. "I'm proud of Sacramento," he said.
But until now, "we have lacked the leadership and personal will to get this done. There have been many gaps and many inefficiencies."
