Sacramento Bee: Recording artist John Legend made his smooth voice heard in Sacramento on Saturday afternoon – with passionate opinions on public education that seemed to impress a packed theater at the Century Stadium on Ethan Way.
Legend called for changes to the public education system that would address the achievement gap, saying: "We should believe that it's a fundamental right for every kid to get a quality education."
The Grammy-winning R&B singer participated in a panel discussion that included state Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, and Jonathan Raymond, superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District.
The screening and discussion were part of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's Stand Up education initiative, which strives to improve student achievement.
Legend, who sits on the boards of the Education Equality Project and Teach for America, said it's important for schools to set expectations high for all their students and to hold teachers accountable for results.
