Prop. 23 could kill state's budding green industry, mayor's keynote speaker warns

Published: 1 years 233 days ago

Sacramento Business Journal:  The next global industrial revolution will be green, and Sacramento and California are well-positioned to benefit from the coming boom, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas Friedman said Thursday.

But the region could miss out if residents vote to suspend the state's landmark climate change law, he said. "I think it would be a disaster for the state," Friedman said of the rollback measure, or Proposition 23. "I hope Prop. 23 fails big."

Friedman, author of the 2008 book "Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution – and How It Can Renew America," spoke before an audience of about 1,000 at downtown's Crest Theatre on Thursday morning.  He was the featured speaker for Mayor Kevin Johnson's monthly "Greenwise" Initiatives meeting.

A rollback of California's climate change law this November could slow down innovation in the state's budding green sector, he said.
