Mayor Johnson unveils 'blueprint' for Sacramento volunteer push

Published: 1 years 234 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Mayor Kevin Johnson on Wednesday unveiled the Sacramento Service Plan – his strategy for drumming up volunteers in Sacramento and intensifying the effect of public service on the city.

Flanked by people from various volunteer organizations at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento, Johnson called the plan "our blueprint to civic engagement."

It is the product of nearly a year of research into how to strengthen local service, as part of Sacramento's involvement with Cities of Service – a coalition of mayors that formed last September with the goal of expanding regional volunteerism.

The plan "strongly focuses on impact" – service that addresses the city's most urgent needs, said Keith Hart, the city's chief service officer.

On Wednesday, Johnson challenged everyone attending to give one hour of service a month and recruit others to do the same.

"We want our city to be a city that works for everyone," Johnson said.
