Editorial: State Fair should give land swap a longer look

Published: 1 years 244 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  The "convergence" land swap – including a new downtown Sacramento arena that the Kings would call home – was always going to be a near miracle to pull off. The Cal Expo board should not prematurely pull the plug before the plan can be fairly and fully vetted.

On Friday, the board is to hear presentations on two options for the State Fair. One, recommended by a consultant it hired, says the best move is to keep the fair at the Cal Expo site, but sell off part of the land to fund improvements.

The second, offered by the "convergence" group led by local developers Gerry Kamilos and David Taylor, proposes to move the fair to the Arco Arena site in Natomas as part of a new entertainment and exhibition complex that could also include an amphitheater, a science museum similar to the Exploratorium in San Francisco and other attractions. The Cal Expo land would be sold for development, generating cash to build the 19,000-seat sports and entertainment arena on city-owned land in the downtown railyard.

The "convergence" group is asking the Cal Expo board to take a more detailed look at its plan and give it another three months to provide more details.
