Sacramento Bee: The financially struggling State Fair faces a major decision about its
future: Should it stay put at Cal Expo, making modest fix-ups, or should it sign on with a private company promising to build and run a fancy new fairground in Natomas?
These two competing options – one modest, one dramatic, both with risks – will be presented to the State Fair board on Sept. 24.
In addition to the future of the fair, the board's decision could determine whether the city's latest plan for a new Kings arena lives or dies. The complex land swap depends on moving the fair to the site of Arco Arena, allowing developers to sell off and build on the Cal Expo site. The profits would help pay for an arena in the downtown railyard.
Mayor Kevin Johnson said it's up to the Cal Expo board to decide whether the land swap plan makes sense for the fair.
"I have said from the start that we would not work against each other, that a healthy Cal Expo is great for Sacramento," he said. "Whatever Cal Expo's board decides, I obviously will respect that decision."
