Sacramento Bee: It's become a familiar cycle in Sacramento.
An event becomes trendy, drawing thousands to downtown or midtown.
Eventually, a public relations nightmare ensues, often in the form of
a high-profile crime or complaints about unruly crowds.
It's happened again, this time with the death of a promising young man
who police said was caught in gang crossfire after this weekend's
Second Saturday art walk through midtown. And just as they have in the
past, city officials are scrambling to ease a jittery public and
nervous business owners.
Emerging from a 30-minute summit inside a midtown building, Mayor
Kevin Johnson said Monday that the Second Saturday art gala would
continue and that officials would spend the next two to three weeks
debating how to keep violence from breaking out at future events.
