Sac Charter High's new principal knows politics is part of the job

Published: 1 years 251 days ago

Sacramento Charter High School's new principal, Will Jarrell, is juggling the part of his job that requires a politician's polished demeanor with his relaxed, verbose nature.

Besides that, Jarrell said he feels at home at the 34th Street charter
school in Oak Park.

"In so many ways, it's a perfect fit for me and a great match for the school," said Jarrell, 49, a former Air Force officer who left active duty in 1991 and worked as a substitute teacher while in the reserves.

And its location – on a district-owned campus in Oak Park – continues
to be challenged by critics who say it deprives nearby neighborhoods
of a public high school. The issue of moving the high school has crept
into the campaigns of candidates running for the Sacramento City
Unified school board, which controls the charter's lease.

"I think he will navigate (the political arena) well," said Nick
Freathy, an algebra II teacher at Sacramento Charter High. "As a
teacher, I feel the political nature. I have confidence he will be
successful. It's a big job."
