Sacramento Bee: The union representing Sacramento City Unified School District teachers has made its recommendations for the three school board races up for grabs in November - and Mayor Kevin Johnson apparently weighed heavily into one of the choices.
In a letter to members, the Sacramento City Teachers Association said it was supporting board President Ellyne Bell in her bid for the Area 1 seat because Bell "reiterates her strong commitment to returning Sacramento Charter High School to a school for the neighborhood and opposes a mayor who seeks to intervene in the district."
St. HOPE, the non-profit organization founded by Johnson, operates Sacramento Charter High School. When the organization was granted control of the school, it reopened it without union teachers.
Johnson has taken a much more active role in city schools than many of his predecessors. He blogs and speaks often on test scores and school performance, and his education initiative focuses on increasing academic achievement and college completion rates, and seeks to establish a report card to grade city schools.
The mayor declined to comment on the Bell endorsement.
