Sacramento Bee: Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday that a three-year effort to identify 2,400 houses for homeless or near-homeless individuals and
families has exceeded its goal.
Only 10 months into the program, he said, permanent housing already
has been identified for more than 1,160 families.
"That very ambitious goal has been met," Johnson told members of the
faith community, social services agencies and media outside St. John's
Church in Sacramento. "We have exceeded that goal. We did that four
months ahead of schedule."
The program, part of Johnson's Sacramento Steps Forward, was supported
by more than $410,000 in fundraising in recent months from faith-based
groups along with individual and corporate donors. The money enabled
the campaign to qualify for $1.6 million in federal funds for the
first two years of a three-year program.
Under the plan, three social service groups – Salvation Army, Lutheran
Social Services and Volunteers of America – are under contract with
the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency to aid a combined 800
families yearly. The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing program
began late last year.
