The push for a new arena in Sacramento is off the fast track.
That's not such a bad thing.
For this complex, costly deal to succeed, it must clearly make sense for all the key players: the Kings, Cal Expo, the developers, the city, the state and taxpayers. The burden of proof is on the development team led by Gerry Kamilos.
Last month, the City Council agreed to extend by 60 more days – until Oct. 24 – its negotiating period with Kamilos to study the proposal's feasibility. For the city to go along, the plan has to work without any citywide tax money and City Hall must get back the $69 million the Kings still owe on the Arco site.
All sides are doing due diligence. That is how it should be. Given the history of false starts and failed efforts, this may be the last chance to build a new arena anytime soon. It has to be done right.
