Editorial: Haste on youth aid may backfire

Published: 1 years 306 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  Sacramento's young people could certainly use more help to stay in school and out of trouble. Far too many end up in gangs, in prison or involved in violence. Youths ages 16 to 24 make up about one-third of the city's homicide victims and two-thirds of homicide suspects.

Unfortunately, the push for a proposed $29 parcel tax to fund youth jobs and educational programs has gone seriously astray. In this economic climate, strong support across the city and its elected leaders is essential to get the needed two-thirds approval from voters for a tax increase.

So the City Council should save supporters from themselves and not vote tonight to jam the tax measure onto the Nov. 2 ballot. To avoid a devastating defeat at the polls, it's best to regroup and steadily build toward 2012.
