Sacramento Bee: Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday the owners of Westfield Downtown Plaza are in serious discussions with a potential buyer, and that he hopes to see a deal emerge in the coming months.
"If an agreement is reached, it can only spell good news for Westfield, the future development of downtown, and the people of Sacramento," Johnson wrote in an email to the Bee.
Johnson issued Westfield an ultimatum last fall, telling the company to put money into enlivening its struggling downtown mall, or sell and get out.
Westfield officials subsequently said they would be willing to accept offers "under certain conditions, and presented with qualified buyers."
A mayoral spokesman, Joaquin McPeek, said Johnson connected two potential buyers with Westfield representatives several months ago, and that talks with one company are serious. McPeek identified one as a California-based company, the other from out-of-state.
