Sacramento City Council votes to hire 30 more police officers

Published: 1 years 334 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday to pump $6 million into the police department over the next three years, money that city officials said will put 30 new cops on the streets by the summer of 2013.

The council vote kicked off a busy day of budget hearings at City Hall, which included restoring funding to the fire and parks departments. The council is scheduled to approve its 2010/11 budget today, filling a $43 million deficit and approving an estimated 100 layoffs.

Mayor Kevin Johnson said at a morning press conference that he wanted the city to eventually employ two police officers per 1,000 residents, but that the number is currently 1.5 per 1,000.

"If we don't start (adding officers) now, we're pushing ourselves back even further," he said. "I don't think that the public is at all satisfied with the number of officers on the streets."
