Sacramento council puts foot down on fire service cutbacks

Published: 1 years 345 days ago

Sacramento Bee:  The Sacramento City Council directed city staff Thursday night to spare two of the four Fire Department rigs budget officials had proposed shutting down on a rotating basis.

During a somber council session, several members criticized a proposal to shut down four units for 48 hours at a time as a way to help eliminate a citywide $43 million deficit.

While Fire Chief Ray Jones said one of the fire units could be spared by tapping ambulance fees, the council urged city staff to look for other revenue sources to help save at least one more rig.
