Sacramento Bee: These are hard times for charities and nonprofits, just like corporations and families, as we all try to make it to economic recovery.
So when a fundraising appeal exceeds its goal, and when the cause is one that many of us would prefer to ignore, it's worth celebrating.
On Wednesday, sponsors of the "One Day to Prevent Homelessness" campaign announced it had surpassed its $400,000 goal with room and time to spare. That accomplishment will be leveraged fourfold, with $1.6 million in matching federal money to help the homeless across the Sacramento region.
A big chunk – $141,914 of the $410,479 raised – came from nearly 80 churches, synagogues and other houses of worship, whose members were asked to give the equivalent of one day's rent or mortgage payment. The remainder came from other individual and corporate donations, and put the two-month campaign over the top well before a September deadline.
Kudos to all the contributors, and to the Sacramento Regional Community Foundation and Sacramento Steps Forward, the organizers.
