Sacramento City Council votes for independent budget analyst

Published: 2 years 88 days ago

Sacramento Bee: The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday night to create an independent budget analyst, opting not to place the proposal by Mayor Kevin Johnson before the voters in June.

In a 5-4 vote, the council voted to adopt an ordinance creating the office that will provide the council with advice on the city's annual budget process. The office will take on a role similar to the state's Legislative Analyst's Office.

Johnson proposed the budget analyst as a package with his now stalled strong-mayor initiative, saying it would provide much-needed advice to the council during budget season. Supporters gathered enough signatures to place the budget proposal on the June ballot, but the City Council also had the option of adopting the ordinance without a public vote.
