Good news on the public safety front, with a quick update on the $8.1 million federal grant to rehire 25 Sacramento Police officers.
The City of Sacramento is moving full speed ahead on the rehires, which means those officers will be pinning their badges back on and returning to duty as soon as possible.
The formal grant acceptance will be on the City Council agenda next Tuesday, October 11.
The grant came to Sacramento thanks to the diligence of Rep. Doris Matsui and the Justice Department. Rep. Matsui and Justice Department officials understood how badly the Sacramento region had been hit by the economy, and the impact on public safety.
Last summer, the city’s dire budget situation – we’ve cut about $200 million from the general fund in four years – prompted the layoffs of more than 100 police officers and support personnel.
There was some discussion about the city “banking” the new federal grant money until next summer, when our 2012-13 budget numbers would come into focus.
As I blogged last week, wasting even a minute in the race to restore officers is not acceptable.
The grants aren’t intended to be saved for a rainy day. Sacramento can’t afford to take a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to crime.
City leadership has recognized Sacramento neighborhoods can’t wait seven or eight months with 25 police officers sitting on the sidelines. Those jobs needed to be filled right now.
Police Chief Rick Braziel, the Police Officers Association and the City Manager’s office worked together to help pave the way to get our officers back where they belong – on the streets, protecting the lives and property of Sacramento residents.
I look forward to formally approving the city’s acceptance of the Justice Department grant next week, and am eager to welcome back our 25 police officers.
