We called it “Christmas in September,” and that’s what it felt like – a gift to the people of Sacramento.
News came this week that the federal government has granted $8.1 million to Sacramento to pay for 25 police officers. We owe a big thanks to Rep. Doris Matsui, who pushed hard in Washington.
The timing couldn’t have been better, coming two months after the city laid off more than 100 police officers and civilian support personnel.
Now, thanks to the Justice Department’s Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program, the city can immediately begin the process of pinning those badges back on our officers and protecting the citizens of Sacramento.
There may be temptation for the city to “bank” the grant money, waiting to see how the 2012-13 budget shakes out.
Let me make it clear: wasting even a minute in the race to restore officers is not acceptable.
The grants aren’t intended to be saved for a rainy day. Sacramento can’t afford to take a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to crime.
Our thin blue line of officers has dropped below acceptable limits. Any delay in rehiring would rob our citizens of the safety they deserve and demand.
Consider this: if the city delayed re-hiring officers, how would we explain it to crime victims who might have been spared their ordeal with an extra 25 cops on the street?
Who at City Hall would like to look a victim in the eye and say: “Sorry about what happened to your family, but we have to wait and see where we stand budget-wise before we can bring back the cops who may have helped prevent this.”
Our first priority as a city must be the protection of our residents. While I believe our responsibilities to the budget are crucial, tomorrow’s budget estimates can’t be given priority above today’s public safety needs – especially when the Justice Department is giving us an $8.1 million check to hire cops.
And I can’t believe the Feds will be pleased if we beg for money for police officers, then squirrel the cash away for future budgets.
Our officers must be brought back immediately. As Mayor, my commitment is to make it happen, starting today.
