Savor a proud and historic moment and get back to work.
That message captures the remarkable comeback victory for Sacramento and the Kings this week.
Among NBA cities, we are the only playoff town without a playoff team. But amazingly, Sacramento is still advancing to the next round.
The decision by the Maloof family to not file for franchise relocation is a credit to a community that believes in itself, that pushed aside skepticism and came together in multiple ways to tell the team’s owners, the NBA and world that we mean business.
For too long, Sacramento has let outsiders define us. Our lottery picks, cowbells and weather-beaten area somehow came to mean we couldn’t be taken seriously as a real NBA market.
In a few short weeks, we turned 26 years of doubt upside down.
First, we ran the numbers and proved Sacramento has the best fan support in the league, with 19 sellout seasons in 26 years.
Then, we redefined the meaning of “corporate support,” when our business community jumped up and committed $10 million in new sponsorship monies for an team whose permanence seemed unlikely at best.
When the NBA came and asked for cash deposits, we didn’t blink. We wired money into an escrow account.
In short order, we proved ourselves to be the kind of community pro sports associations dream about – dedicated, loyal, patient, serious about its team and not distracted by competition from other leagues.
What we really did this week was two things: We established Sacramento as a formidable major league community, and we guaranteed ourselves a year to close the deal.
It should be obvious by now that our victory will be brief without a clear path to a new entertainment and sports complex. The Kings and league have given us until March 1, 2012, to identify financing.
The deadline may seem daunting, but I think it’s perfect – a ticking clock and motivating inducement to make the Sacramento region build something incredible for itself, something that will be an economic driver and cultural centerpiece.
In tough times, we need encouragement to think big and bold. We need reminders of our pioneering spirit and our collective strength.
Make no mistake – the new entertainment and sports complex won’t be built simply for the NBA and Kings. It will be built for us, the people of the Sacramento region, and our children.
It will bring shows and jobs and economic stimulation that have positive impacts across six counties.
In the next few days, the Mayor’s Office will roll out plans involving regional support for a new events center.
I don’t want to suggest the work will be easy.
But as the last few weeks have proven, when Sacramento believes in itself, nothing can stop us.
