They don’t send engraved invitations, but this is a special event I wouldn’t miss for anything.
The NBA just granted my request to fly to New York next month and speak to their Board of Governors.
This means a couple of things: first, there’s still a little time left on the clock regarding our future with the Kings. Second, Sacramento means business when it comes to continuing our 25 year partnership with the NBA.
I’m excited about the meeting. It’s an idea I recently discussed with former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory.
A decade ago, Mayor McCrory was invited to the same group when ownership and arena issues were leaving North Carolina without the Charlotte Hornets.
Mr. McCrory graciously explained how he aligned the community in Charlotte to demonstrate wide support for a new entertainment and sports complex, new ownership group and new team.
He told me Charlotte felt the NBA was critical for marketing the city nationally. He said Charlotte had great fans and loyal business community. Within six months of losing the Hornets, the project was moving full-speed ahead for a new downtown events center. The first season of the Charlotte Bobcats followed a year later.
Things were different a decade ago. The NBA was expanding. The economy hadn’t suffered its worst collapse since the Great Depression.
But obviously, there are many similarities between where Charlotte was and where Sacramento is.
After my conversation with Mayor McCrory, I asked the NBA for the opportunity to attend their April 14 meeting and speak to their Executive Committee.
The NBA has graciously granted my request. While plans aren’t final, I will probably bring a contingent of Sacramentans with me who can speak to the seriousness of our efforts to build a new arena and support a team.
But this is not the time to get overly optimistic. The meeting will be very professional and business-minded. The committee is comprised of NBA team owners, all of whom are accustomed to making big decisions, none of whom like to waste time.
They will want to know about possibilities of a new arena in Sacramento, and whether after all these years, our community can finally deliver.
But the bottom line is, the opportunity to speak straight to the NBA is a huge step for our community. It puts our destiny exactly where it belongs: back in our own hands.

Just please show some fight at that meeting. Fight for the our fans who have cheered this team on for 25 years. You need to speak to the following points: (1) the NBA needs small markets to be part of this league and a new revenue sharing agreement in the CBA will allow small markets to stabilize after this wretched economy (2) Sacramento itself is a model city for basketball and overly supportive of its team. The reason for the non-support in recent years was mainly due to a lack of talent and ability of the owners to spend. (3) Owners who are in extreme financial distress as the Maloofs should not be allowed to pick up a team and move it. This should be part of the new CBA. And finally, (4) The NBA should be ashamed if the Maloofs do not pay off their debt to the City of Sacramento. Representative the City with passion and enthusiasm. With enthusiasm, great things can be accomplished.

Or is the financial hole left behind going to be a consideration by the board of governors? One would think so considering the state of the nation economically. I understand the NBA is mostly concerned with their bottom line, but I don't think the small amount of cash flow the NBA might see in the short term from this move could matchup with the money the team generated in its glory years. That said, if the Maloofs were re-committed to the city of Sacramento if their hand was forced by a downward vote I believe the team is not far from returning to their winning ways. A few million spent on roster moves and I could easily see the team in the mix in the playoffs as early as next season. A new arena being built in the coming year would also stimulate dollars in the direction of the NBA, and a higher profit water mark in the coming years rather than a quick gratification in the next year from a move that would consist of the team sharing an already tapped market with two other teams.
