By Kevin Johnson
Mayor of Sacramento
It feels like a slow death.
From the start of the saga that may soon close the Kings’ era in Sacramento, I have said the community should focus on what it can control, and not worry about decisions that are out of our hands.
The decision to move a business – let’s not forget, the Kings are a business – rests with the owners. We can talk and do our best to persuade, but in the end, the choice to relocate belongs to the people who own the team.
Of course, none of this makes it any easier to watch the steady drip of what will likely be the Kings’ final weeks in Sacramento after 26 years.
First we heard from NBA Commissioner David Stern, who said rumors about the Kings’ talks with Anaheim were more than rumors.
Next was the decision by the Kings not to share financial market data with the team of professionals selected by the City Council to study the feasibility of our new entertainment and sports complex.
Then we saw the Kings playing games in “Royals” uniforms – supposedly to celebrate their history when the club was based in Rochester, N.Y., and Cincinnati from 1948 to 1972.
Last week, local media broke the story about a lawyer for the Kings gobbling up Web domains and name rights to the “Anaheim Royals,” among other Southern California titles.
Now we have the Anaheim City Council preparing to take action on improvements to the city’s arena, where the as-yet-unofficial Anaheim Royals will play.
Meantime, Sacramento fans take the high road.
Thanks to the fans and groups like Here We Stay, I want to keep fighting to keep the Kings. But another part of me wants this painful drama to end.
The strange part is, our true destiny as a professional sports town continues to rest with us – not the Kings or Royals or whatever they want to call themselves.
Our region – one of the most desirable places to live, work and raise families in the U.S. – can start the next chapter of our cultural destiny in the upcoming weeks.
It’s in our hands. It’s our decision.
First things first, we’ll fight to protect taxpayers and the city. That means making sure the Kings fully pay off their loan.
Then, we plan for the future.
By May, the feasibility study by ICON Venue, David Taylor and partners, should be completed. The pros at ICON are now building a new entertainment and sports complex on paper – figuring it down to the price of the restroom faucets.
We will know exactly where we stand when the study is ready. The question for the Sacramento region will be: Are we ready?
The slow death is almost over. It’s painful. But a new beginning is right around the corner.

Hi KJ, As stated from an earlier post, you're doing the right thing in not getting combative with the Maloofs in public. I realize that the long process you've been through must truly feel like a "slow death" and your instinct is to let go of this issue entirely and also assume there would be a strong likelihood of landing another team. Unfortunately, the NBA, unlike other sports, does not have a strong history of “backfilling” cities that have lost teams, Charlotte being the exception, not the rule. Morever, the Kings move to Anaheim sets a new precedent away from smaller, one team markets and towards multiple team mega-markets. In that environment, the league would rather have a second Northern Cal team in San Jose, being closer to a bigger corporate and population base. If the Kings leave, there would be no major league sports (combined with no major college sports) in the 20th largest metro area for generations to come. I'm sure you understand the political impact of such a scenario. This is why I strongly suggest you spend the next few months (particularly before April 18) working with the NBA owners to convince why, as you said, the grass would be greener in Sacramento than in Anaheim, for both the Maloofs and the league in general. In addition to the Lakers and Clippers being immediately hurt (and the Warriors potentially impacted down the road with a team moving to San Jose), the league eliminates one market where there's only one tam and does little to expand a new market, which happens to have many teams, including direct competition (the Ducks). Please focus on analysis, facts and data to support your arguments (not to mention some sentimental footage of what the Kings mean to this community) and I believe you can get the necessary votes to block the move. The other hope, of course, is that the Maloofs decide for themselves that this is not a good deal (especially after they learn of the Lakers/Clippers demands). Again, I agree with your approach that it's time for the city to be civil with the Maloofs. No more lawsuit threats or “good riddance” comments. At the same time, please don't give up altogether. Look at what Frank Jordan was able to do in 1992 with the Giants. He lobbied the owners hard to block the sale until a local group was put together to buy the team. At the time there was very lukewarm support throughout the Bay Area for the Giants. Now we couldn't imagine life without them-and that’s in an area where we still had another baseball team, as well as teams in other sports. I realize that in this case there’s no white knight with deep pockets available, but the strategy of buying time to at least present a viable arena plan to the NBA owners is still a good use of your time. Seen in a different light, it would be embarrassing to not even lobby the owners in April, then only one month later have a clear arena plan, only to wait years, possibly decades, to find a primary tenant. Good luck, Mr. Mayor

You best be focusing your attention to damage control regarding the fact the City is going to default on the bonds. People have a full understanding now that the Arena is owned by the City and with no tenant will default on the bonds. This is scandalous....not your fault KJ, but this needs to be addressed.

KJ - PLEASE ASSIST THE MR. BUSS AND STERLING WITH CONTACTING THE NBA OWNERS!!!!!! ESPN's Marc Stein reported the Lakers and Clippers have reached out to owners around the league to try to drum up the requisite support from other teams needed to block the Kings' move. The eventual vote will be decided by simple majority, meaning the L.A. teams must find 14 other teams to side with them to prevent Southern California from becoming basketball's version of Three's Company, should the Kings decide to formally apply for relocation. "They're putting publicity out and trying to seed the ground, but there hasn't even been a formal Board of Governors [decision] in front of the owners," Jackson said of the progress made by brothers Joe and Gavin Maloof, who co-own the Kings. "There's definitely a push, but that doesn't mean that it's going to happen." Jackson envisioned a scenario in which the vote would be split and ultimately decided by what direction the New Orleans Hornets lean. The Hornets, of course, were purchased by the NBA in late December from majority owner George Shinn and minority owner Gary Chouest in hopes that the league could find them a new ownership group. "What does the league feel about it?" Jackson said. "How is New Orleans going to vote?" League-appointed Hornets governor Jac Sperling will cast New Orleans' vote. Stein also reported that one way the Kings could be discouraged about making a move even with support of a majority owners' vote is by the league's assessing a hefty relocation fee to the Maloofs.

I speak for the people of Sacramento when I say that we are lucky to have Kevin Johnson as mayor. However, we are just as delighted to have our Kings, the most notable icon of pride this greatly underrated city has to showcase to the rest of the world. It's not over, Mayor. And while I feel and understand your passion for the region King or King-less, many life long fans like myself don't want to throw in the towel just yet. Let's keep the fight on, turn this situation around, and help Sacramento take that next great leap by developing a great new sports/entertainment complex WITH the Kings as the main attraction. Please keep on fighting for the fans and people of this great city. Thank you.

Sacramento, we feel your pain. Seattle lost its team to Oklahoma City a few years ago. Don't kid yourselves that you won't feel the loss economically. But the NBA is corrupt and no fun to watch anymore, anyway. You can replace that with something better, and you don't need a new arena to be successful. Engage in a healthy debate, decide your course, and get after it. Life's too short to cry over the NBA leaving. You're just the latest city to be used, used up, and discarded by a franchise whose greed knows no limit.

It's time to get off this emotional roller-coaster we've been riding and get something done. It's not over, yet! Be pro-active, Sacramento has to think outside the box for once. If Anaheim can secure funding to make the necessary improvements to the Honda Center through private investments, so can we...to help fill the gap, and build a sports & entertainment facility. You make the calls! I don't believe the Maloofs really want to be second/third fiddle in the SoCal market, they want to be "winners," here in Sac, where they have the loudest and most loyal fans in the NBA. Step up to the plate and solidify a deal to Keep the Kings in SACRAMENTO. Personally, if we loose our Kings as the "anchor tenant" the sports & entertainment facility is really not going to matter. You're living in a pipe dream if you think Sacramento will ever get another professional sports team. Seattle and other areas are better suited to attract teams. I still believe you can do it, if anyone can...you just need to change your approach. The Sacramento region is counting on you!!!

Mr. Johnson, With all due respect we know what has happened up to this point. We need you to keep fighting this war until their move is official; similar to being down 25 pts in the start of the 4th quarter of a basketball game. You would not refer to losing the game as a "slow death", you would keep fighting until the very end. There are two routes to block the path remaining: (1) inform as many people as possible in So Cal about the concerns surrounding the Kings owners, public financing, etc. in Anaheim (we will take care of this); and (2) YOU CAN CALL EVERY NBA OWNER TO LOBBY THEM TO VOTE AGAINST THE MOVE - YOU ARE AN EX-NBA BASKETBALL PLAYER!!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Don't stop fighting and go the extra mile. This is not a request, this is an expectation of our mayor. Respectfully, Scott

In the city of Anaheim we have so many bonds which were passed to help support Disney, we the taxpayers get buggered with all the fees and on top of that they raised the utility rates for the "Infrastructure". We may have Prop 13 in Anaheim but the additional fees, bonds and increases are one reason I will vote against this "King" basketball relocation. Those "Kings" need to pay for all the rebuilding, additions, modifications another way, not on the backs of the Anaheim residents!!

It's business, plain and simple, and OC beats Sacramento in every category. Orange County is bigger at 3.1 Million people, and it's far wealthier with a $82,000 median family income. Heck, the neighborhoods just to the east of Anaheim's Honda Center arena have median incomes double the OC average, with Villa Park 5 miles away at $200,000 income and Anaheim Hills nearby at $160,000 income. Orange County is also far more ethnically diverse than Sacramento, and the entire OC community is a marketers dream come true. Down the street from Honda Center is Disneyland, the surrounding neighborhood has lots of snazzy restaurants and retail, and the more luxurious and fancier Honda Center will have no problem filling the 85 luxury suites it has for NBA games. You look at what Orange County has to offer, and what Anaheim's Honda Center has waiting, and it's amazing that Sacramento held on for as long as it did trying to pretend it was at least a second-tier city. Sacramento is really a third-tier city only because it's the capital of a big state. Take the slimy state politics away, and it's really a fourth-tier city that should have nothing more than civic softball leagues and maybe indoor lacrosse or roller derby nights. Orange County and Anaheim outclasses, outspends, outmarkets, and outmaneuvers Sacramento at every turn. It's time to acknowledge those hard facts.

The kings will become the Anaheim Royals. On "here we stay" night the team wore Royals jerseys, What a slap in the face to every fan in the arena chanting "stay in Sac" by the maloofs. Hopefully we could become a pro sport city again and I'm not just talking about having an NBA team but a MLB, NFL and even a NHL team or MlS as well. This city's population is growing and the economy could get better, theres a light at the end of this very very dark tunnel.

Mayor Johnson, Related to the departure of the Maloofs we also watch their financial spiral. Rumors are they will file bankruptcy shortly. Yes it is just a rumor. But as you watch the jockeying of the loan "note" on the palms I think the City of Sacramento needs to be on notice. Please be cognizant of this as you go forth and that you represent the interests of the Sacramento taxpayer especially related to the money the Maloof gang owes our fair city. What a final slap in our collective faces if they not only pull the plug on the team but also walk from the loan payout under the ruse of bankruptcy protection.

Unfortunately, due to short term political thinking that has dominated City politics for too long, this city has only dealt with the (often) petty issues directly in front us in a knee-jerk fashion, never looking to the future, never planning past the next election. Also unfortunately, this is not a Kings only issue which has finally become the 'next' issue. The loss of the Kings almost certainly also means the loss of the one poor venue this great city has for the many large events which bring business to Sacramento. The Kings use of Arco is a fraction, I believe 20% or so of it's use. Opportunities to solve this problem in the past failed - and so the City has no doubt (in my mind) already missed many revenue bringing opportunities, and perhaps some corporate business', that a state of the art facility could have generated. Let's hope we have another year to solve the problem - but it doesn't look good. Unfortunately, without the Kings as a guaranteed tenant it will be more difficult financially than ever to get something built.

I appreciate your honest and forward approach in regards to the Kings relocating. I think sugar coating at this point would be insulting. Thanks for not. Sacramento will not be a better place to live without the Kings. It's not a metropolitan city with an abundance of entertainment options. It's a one trick pony that is on the verge of being sold. The importance of the Kings to our community is not the NBA or sports in general. The Kings stand as the one thing that all Sacramento residents have in common. It's the one thing in this town that brings us together. When the Kings are hot, race, religon, sexual orientation, or culture never are an issue. We're a diverse town and we need that gel that keeps us all on the same page. I think the Kings provide that. If the Kings leave, so be it. Let's just make sure that we build that arena and bring the gel back to this town.

Sorry to hear that you guys are losing your team. Your city will survive it. Having spent part of my childhood in Anaheim, I'd love to see them get an NBA franchise. However, their NBA franchise is already there -- it's called the Clippers, and they're only 25 miles away. Bring the Clippers to Anaheim, rename them the Anaheim Aces, and leave Donald Sterling in L.A. because he's sucked the team dry too many times. If the Kings do move, Seattle's the most logical choice. They got screwed out of the Supersonics, although OKC has since proven they deserved an NBA franchise.

Kevin, I to would love to see Sacramento rise to its full potential. But to many people here don't care or they think it is fine the way it is. I remember when Chris Webber first came here he was not happy about coming to Sacramento and now I believe he calls this his home. Why come to Sac there is nothing to do or see here. Why can't we change that now and forever by making this area just what it is a wonderfull place to come and live but more so thrive. If anyone wants to see a great show we travel to Vegas or San Francisco or? Why not make Sacramento the same? I am right there with you in making this a better place and I salute your efforts in doing so. As for what Mr. Dooley said he is right on with his remarks. Thanks again and thanks for caring. Jim

The sad truth mayor Johnson is that the kings are leaving under your watch. You shouldve engaged the Taylor group long ago. It is up to you sir to get an arena and a new nba team here. It will define your legacy as the mayor of Sacramento. Right now you are sounding like a quitter.

Kevin, you are my fellow Dragon, so I will kindly tell you, we need your leadership to KEEP THE KING S IN SACRAMENTO, NO FORCE THEM OUT. We have had 25 plus years of poor leadership in this town. The politicians only care about the power they hold and the local media has done a poor job at best covering the kings. All they have printed is about the Brothers Maloof and all of their inherited millions and how unfair that must be to the average working person. If they leave I do not blame the Maloofs, I blame every politician that holds office within the City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Bee. None of the above mentioned have done anything to promote a new arena. The attitude of the local politicians has been a very 1950's 1960's cowtown mentality, no vision or future and furthermore they do not really care about the citizens of The greater Sacramento area or the quality of life here. So if I can kindly say ENOUGH WITH THE POOR ME ATTITUDE, NUT UP AND SHOW SOME COURAGE AND LEADERSHIP. You may be correct about them leaving, but you should be positive, right down to the very end. Continued Success to You, Jeffrey Dooley Sacramento High School Class of 1983

This has been several years in the making, not just this year. The Maloofs have wanted out of Sacramento since they couldn't buy the championship. First, they gutted the team, then fired the coach, and then sat back and let the team become a shambles of what it was at one point. I used to be a big fan of the team, but lost all hope when they started trading the marquee players to save money. I've moved from Sacramento years ago, but I believe that the city is better off not bowing to the Maloofs to build their new arena. Too much money that the city doesn't have, and the taxpayers will have to foot the bill. Spend the money on the teachers, the police, and the firefighters. Much more deserving than the Maloofs.
