Mayor of Sacramento
Leaving Sacramento is never easy, even when the journey involves promoting our city. But this trip was unique.
For the past several days, I’ve been in Washington, meeting with some amazing people. I will have more to say about the trip next week, but wanted everyone to get a quick update.
Tuesday night, the destination was the U.S. Naval Observatory, residence of Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. More than 100 African-American mayors and legislators were invited by the Vice President to help celebrate Black History Month.
In heartfelt comments, the Vice President recounted his experiences as a young, new attorney in 1968, after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Vice President Biden talked about the importance of free public education and the progress we’ve made since the violent days that followed Dr. King’s death.
The journey continued Wednesday, with a speech by Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey at the American Enterprise Institute.
Gov. Christie discussed his frustrations with Congress, stating, "My children's future and your children's future is more important than some political strategy. What game is being played down here is irresponsible and dangerous."
The governor, a rising political star, also talked about the need for big, bold ideas.
Later Wednesday came an incredible highlight – an invitation to the White House to join President Obama for a screening of the new HBO film “Thurgood,” a one-man play starring Laurence Fishburne as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
But I’m afraid details from the Presidential visit will have to wait for the next blog. Please check back.
