Mayor of Sacramento
As funeral arrangements are being released today for Gen. Vang Pao, who died last Thursday in Clovis at age 81, I would like to offer my thoughts and prayers not only to the Gen. Vang’s immediate family but to the many thousands of Hmong residents of our community who revered this remarkable man.
Gen. Vang, whom I was fortunate to meet last year, was more than an iconic figure within the Hmong community. Indeed, he was a hero who transcended his humble origins as the son of Laotian farmers to become an internationally renowned champion of freedom and democracy.
I trust that the memory of Gen. Vang’s devotion to democracy will extend to future generations of Americans and freedom loving people around the world.
During the six-day funeral for Gen. Vang, which is scheduled to begin February 4 in Fresno, I call on all Sacramentans to take a moment to reflect upon the contributions to our freedom made not only by Gen. Vang, but by the people he represented.
