One year ends, and another begins. It’s a great time for reflection, and a great opportunity to set goals for the new year.
Here are my resolutions for 2011:
1. Bring business and labor together to create jobs and grow the economy.
We must get our city back to work. I’m committed to working with business and labor to improve the economy. Let’s support the growth of quality jobs for all citizens, and promote business-friendly policies that streamline processes and create incentives to help our economy grow.
2. Go green.
Our Greenwise Initiative has rallied the entire region around our potential as a national leader in the green movement. At City Hall, I’ll promote policies and strategies that grow the green economy and protect the environment. At home, I’ll cut down on my water and energy use, recycle more, buy local, and find other simple and practical ways to live green.
3. Stand up for students.
We can’t have a great city without great schools. Education is the cause of my life, and I’m more committed than ever to work with policymakers, school leaders, teachers, parents and students to ensure we make each and every decision based on what’s best for our children.
4. Keep our neighborhoods safe.
No matter our economic or budget challenges, I must do everything in my power to protect our citizens. I’m committed to working with city and community leaders to improve public safety.
5. Show the Governor around town.
We should all be excited about Governor Jerry Brown’s decision to live downtown. It’s been a while since he “closed down the bars,” as he put it. Revitalizing our downtown is a top priority, and I’ll be first in line to show our new Governor just how hip and lively our city has become.
6. Keep the Kings.
As our only professional sports franchise, the Kings are a Sacramento institution: a source of jobs, economic activity, family-friendly entertainment, and national and international attention. I can’t help them win more games, but I will do my best to ensure they stay right here in Sacramento.
7. Build strong relations with my Council colleagues.
Our new Council Members bring fresh ideas and energy to City Hall. I’m committed to fostering strong relationships with all Council Members around shared vision and agenda to move our city forward.
8. Spend more time in the community.
With so much to do at City Hall, it’s easy to get disconnected from the issues and concerns of everyday citizens. I resolve to spend much more of 2011 out in the community, listening to what you and your neighbors have to say about the city.
9. Run in one race per month.
No New Year’s resolution list is complete without a health goal. I’ll be lacing up my running shoes at least once a month to maintain my personal fitness and promote an active lifestyle.
10. Stay bold.
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t push for at least one big, bold and audacious idea to move our city forward. Stay tuned!
