On Tuesday, the Office of Mayor Johnson announced the appointment of the City’s new Chief Service Officer, Keith Hart. As you can read in the press release, Keith was hired through a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and Cities of Service Coalition. Sacramento was selected for this funding because we already have a history of community service, and our Mayor has proven his desire to make civic engagement a priority.
Last year, the Mayor asked Sacramentans to log 500,000 hours of service, and the response was overwhelming. This year, the Mayor has set an impressive goal (3 million hours!) but has added help from our new Chief Service Officer.
Keith’s role will be to help focus these volunteer efforts in a way that will provide the greatest impact to the city’s areas of need. With his national experience, he provides a wealth of knowledge of best practices, and, through meetings with stakeholders throughout the community, is quickly learning the challenges and opportunities of the region. Cities of Service has given us an ambitious (and rapidly approaching) goal for the unveiling of The Citywide Service Plan so, as Keith often says, let’s get to service!
Sarah is completing an eight-week fellowship in the Office of Mayor Kevin Johnson. She is entering her second year at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management.
