This past Wednesday night I had the opportunity to join the Meadowview Neighborhood Association at their monthly meeting. The meeting was filled with enthusiastic citizens dedicated to improving their community. Usually the discussion of our city focuses on the development of downtown in places such as K Street or the railyards. Lost in the discussion are some of the real opportunities we have in areas like Meadowview, Freeport Blvd., and Stockton Blvd.
That’s why I am a strong proponent of infill development. I believe that we should look to build up instead of building out. By developing infill projects, we can reduce urban sprawl and help revitalize many of our neighborhoods.
Like Oak Park, Meadowview has faced difficulties in recruiting a local neighborhood grocer. They also face challenges with public safety and education. I was able to connect with the citizens that turned out for this meeting, because I faced many of the same issues in Oak Park.
Towards the end of our meeting I asked what the audience would like to see in their new mayor. The most common answer was accountability and access. They would also like to see a mayor that sets clear priorities and achieves results.
I’m looking forward to the opportunity of working with the families that live in Meadowview. Together we will preserve the uniqueness of this neighborhood while spurring economic growth.
