By Kevin Johnson
Mayor of Sacramento

Sacramento residents fed up with the status quo have a call to action: they must support change in the city’s largest council area, District 1.

Whether you live in the district – which includes downtown, South Natomas and North Natomas – or are tired of waiting for change in Sacramento, the opportunity to support reform candidate Angelique Ashby must not be missed.

The challenge is easy for District 1 residents. Simply cast your ballot between now and June 8 for Ashby. If you live elsewhere, you can still make your voice heard. Give money, time or both to support Ashby.

Ashby represents the vision, energy and commitment needed to bring the next generation of leadership to City Hall. Businesswoman, mom, and community activist, she has devoted years to improving public safety and quality of life in her neighborhood.

Ashby already has significant support. Police officers, firefighters, the Metro Chamber and The Sacramento Bee have endorsed her. In recent days, police and fire officers put more than 100 people in the streets of Natomas, knocking on doors and reminding citizens to vote for Ashby.

But there are no guarantees. Ashby faces a tough battle. Reformers never have life easy in Sacramento politics. I’m speaking from personal experience.

In the Bee this past Sunday, columnist Marcos Breton described the challenges. Since 1992, only one incumbent has been voted off the city council – ex-mayor Heather Fargo, my opponent in 2008.

The status quo is often too powerful for reformers to overcome.

That’s why Election Day June 8 is so important.  Like my election in 2008, it’s an opportunity to send another message of change to City Hall. Let’s make sure we all do our part to help Angelique win District 1.
