By Kevin Johnson
Mayor of Sacramento
Around the Mayor’s office, a key goal is to make Sacramento a world-class destination city.
But you can’t be world class (or a destination) if you aren’t on the map.
For years, Sacramento has been invisible on the Wall Street Journal’s national weather map.
Literally invisible. Non-existent. Sacramento was just an empty spot in Northern California. Missing in action.
Frankly, this oversight (or insult) wasn’t a major priority of mine. We have bigger issues to deal with in Sacramento.
And frankly, we don’t need validation from the Journal (or any other journalistic entity) to affirm our greatness as a city.
But when this problem (or really stupid obvious error) was brought to my attention during a visit to "Fox 40 Live" with Paul Robins, Annalee Penny and Rosemary Orozco, I decided enough was enough.
I went right to top – sending an e-mail to Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul whose company News Corp. owns the Journal.
Within 24 hours, Mr. Murdoch moved mountains and found room for Sacramento on the Journal’s weather map.
There’s no guarantee that placement on the Journal’s weather page will help make Sacramento a world-class destination city.
But it can’t hurt. And they spelled the name right.
Thank you, Mr. Murdoch.
