Now the fun starts. After rolling out the "Rules of the Game" for building a new entertainment center and sports arena in Sacramento, we are already receiving calls at the Mayor's office about ideas, questions and how people can help. The feedback has been extremely positive, which makes me even more excited. One thing I've already learned, the idea of building a new entertainment complex in Sacramento brings out some interesting emotions.
I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't like the idea of having a new arena -- plus the jobs, business opportunities and economic activities that go along with a new center.
But when we talk about paying for a new building, the shouting quiets down and people start looking at their shoes.
That's OK. One main reason why I rolled out the "Rules of the Game" is to let people know we can develop a path to a new entertainment center, a path that includes putting taxpayers first, not being leveraged by other cities, negotiating from strength and thinking inside and outside the box.
No, I don't know the answers today. But I have no doubt we can find the answers if we follow the Rules and work together.
As noted during the press conference following the speech, we will be pushing new ideas forward every week or so.
We will make available a guideline for proposals. And we will form an outside task force to help evaluate proposals. We will build a cooperative process that blends the best and most creative people outside of City Hall, along with experienced people inside government. And we will reach out to leaders across the region.
Make no mistake, there is urgency. We've waited far too long for tangible results on creating a new arena in Sacramento. But from the early returns, the community is excited and engaged in the process.
The "Rules of the Game" are off to a fast start.
