Something incredible is happening in Sacramento. The city is sending more police officers into the streets, making us safer. Normally, adding 10 officers would not qualify as "incredible." But these are not normal times. Cities and counties across California -- including Sacramento County -- are cutting ranks, laying off police officers. Budget cuts have devastated public safety budgets.
The story has a different twist in the City of Sacramento.
Thanks to a collective effort from City Hall to Washington, the Sacramento Police Department secured money to add cops, not subtract them. And I'm proud to say the cops we're adding reflect our city -- diverse in gender, race and age.
I attended the swearing-in ceremony for 10 new officers at police headquarters. Most of the new recruits are in their 20s, but one is 52, a veteran Marine Corps officer in top condition and wise from experience. One new officer cut her honeymoon short to begin patrol. Others came from nearby police agencies.
Looking at the new recruits made me feel good about the quality public safety professionals Sacramento can attract.
Public safety was a fundamental part of my campaign for mayor. You can't have a great city unless citizens feel safe on their streets and in their homes and work places.
I promise to do everything possible to make Sacramento a safe and secure city. As we put more police officers on the streets, I'm making good on that promise.
